Designed by noted architects John Proctor and William Farrell, this stately American Four Square was built in 1906 for Canadian-born Albert Tozer and his wife Rosella. Tozer moved to Tacoma in 1891 and joined his brother in the lumber industry, ultimately owning and operating two lumber mills. Tozer also owned the largest apartment building in Tacoma at the time, the Ingleside Apartments on North 2nd, as well as a number single family homes throughout the North End. The Tozer House is a contributing property in the North Slope Historic District and is listed on the local and national registers of historic places.
Tacoma’s North Slope is one of Washington State’s largest historic districts, consisting of more than 950 homes. Much of the neighborhood was built on a 166-acre farm owned at one time by Tacoma pioneer Job Carr. The Carr family sold the land for residential development in the 1880s, and the district experienced three distinct building booms from 1888-1893, 1902-1915 and 1919-1929. As a result, the neighborhood includes a wide variety of architectural styles including Victorian, Craftsman, Tudor and American Foursquare. Early North Slope residents of note included Washington State Governor Ernest Lister and a young Bing Crosby. The neighborhood provides easy access to Wright Park, Old Town, the Stadium District and the waterfront.
