Home Trends for 2022

Our needs have changed at home, so it follows that the way we design our homes should reflect those changes. The following list will help acquaint you with new home-design trends and offer some practical ways to incorporate them into your home.

Working from home

There’s no denying that the importance of the home office has continued to grow in recent years. All signs indicate that working from home in some capacity is here to stay, with numerous companies already taking steps towards a permanent hybrid model or going fully remote. So, what does that mean for you as a homeowner? It means that even if you’re not working remotely, the next owner of your home very possibly could be. As such, a dedicated home-office space is much higher on buyer priority lists than ever before. Home offices are most certainly a trend for 2022, but all indications suggest that they will continue to be important far beyond this year.

Multifunctionality

Homeowners across the globe have been forced to be more resourceful with the spaces in their homes. We’ve seen reading nooks become classrooms for children’s remote learning, basements converted to home gyms, and closets transformed into conference rooms with virtual backgrounds. Accordingly, multifunctionality is near the top of the list for this year’s design trends. Items like convertible furniture, bed frames with storage space, and foldable desks will help bring added utility to the spaces in your home. Go vertical by incorporating ladders, shelving, and hanging accent pieces to free up floor space. Multifunctionality is a means to making the most of your square footage, so it helps to think outside the box.

Minimalism

There is plenty to be said about the theory and ideals behind the minimalist movement, but for most homeowners, it simply means getting rid of the things you don’t need. The more time spent at home, the more time there is to assess the needs of your household and what items are truly essential. This approach is part of a greater trend toward sustainability and eco-friendliness, but that doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy a solar panel to make a difference. (Although, solar panels can deliver significant long-term savings on energy costs and help to increase home value!) Start this year off on the right foot by taking stock of everything in your home and identifying which items are necessary for your lifestyle and which you can get rid of.

Privacy

As we’ve spent more time at home, there has naturally arisen a desire for separate, defined spaces. Privacy allows us to focus, to relax, and to stay productive. It is especially important for those who work, exercise, or conduct hobbies. We need spaces to incorporate these endeavors into our lives and having a dedicated space, such as a home gym, office, or hobby room, is the best way to enjoy our time spent doing them.

Plants

The trend of incorporating plant life is a result of the collective longing for the outdoors many of us have experienced in recent times. Indoor gardens have skyrocketed in popularity. They have homeowners literally breathing easier as they find ways to add organic appeal to the spaces in their homes. Research which plants thrive in your local climate, and their maintenance needs, to find which ones are right for you. Indoor plants can create a sense of Zen in any room and can be a quick fix for spaces that are lacking in color.

I hope these tips help you enjoy your home even more in the year ahead. Happy 2022!
