  1. September Salmon in the Marina

Since the early 70's Ocosta High School Students have been raising fingerling salmon in pens at the marina as an oceanography project. You can see them in March/April on float 4. When they mature they return in search of spawning grounds and can be caught right off the dock from mid september to late October. There is a derby too! These fish should start returning any day now. Come try your hand at the simplest salmon fishing ever!

  2. Net pens which hold up to 200,000 fingerling coho salmon each year. The Ocosta High School Oceanography Class feeds, measures and releases the fish after they reach a certain growth goal.
  3. Salmon school along the rocks near the Islander. Often you can see schools of over 200 fish at a time!
  4. With their minds on spawning... the adult coho don't always find a lure attractive.
  5. Sept 29th and 30th 2007 saw a lot of fish on the dock! Here are a couple of nice coho on a stringer.
  6. Solitude makes this fishery enjoyable.
  7. Success makes it delicious. Howard shows off a 10 pounder
  8. A jack salmon held high.
  9. Peacefull setting in between schools of fish passing by.
  10. Interesting cloud patterns.
  11. Islander Dock. This 6 pound steelhead was landed by Jerry Anderson. It is believed that there may be some steelhead mixed in with the Coho!
  12. Fresh Jack Salmon... 1.5 pounds You can keep 6 total salmon per day, 3 of which can be adult salmon
  13. These nice jacks were caught only 100 yards from the Doughnut Shop... Can it get any better?
  14. yes.. I guess it can :-) 13.9 pounder

  224. Lighthouse

The Westport Lighthouse was built in 1898 and is the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast. When built it was less than 500 feet from high tide but years of accretions has left it well back from the present water line! RECENTLY PAINTED & Should be open for tours regularly.

  225. 01/29/07 Once an ocean view from ground level... now surrounded by trees

  228. Another angle on the beautiful lighthouse
  229. The paved oceanfront path has the lighthouse in view for the entire 1.1 mile path from the condominiums to the jetty.

  245. Elk & Deer

Deer at the marina? who would think it!

This family has become regulars in the early morning scene at the dock
  246. I thought they were headed down to get on a boat..
  247. but they turned and headed toward the islander
  248. the next day they were seen out on the point at The Point at Westport Harbor Condominiums
  249. I thought they were going to enter #101
  250. but they moved over to graze on the vegetation
  251. On the way to the jetty the clearing of land for the golf course has inspired a lot more vegetation suitable for deer
  252. The population is growing nicely
  253. Often as many as 10 deer can be seen
  254. and the population is growing through the year
  255. Johns River Elk
  256. Incredible
  257. This is a majestic animal.
  258. Wildflowers line the walk and meadows.
  259. The Elk herd varies in size. Today there were around 30 head.
  260. They kept low but the Bull is showing!
  261. Then they stir and the Bull shows himself. Not the same one you see in later pictures. The cows instinctively surround the bull (or does the Bull instinctively stay in the middle)
  262. After they moved away the Bull kept sneaking back for a look. Can you see him?
  263. On July 2nd, 2007 I got these pics of a rare sight... a whitetail deer on the coast! Taken on the bayfront stretch of hwy 105 just before you get to westport
  264. Still in velvet, this buck looks like he is trying to find some friends.
  265. This is one of the many deer grazing near the future golf course on the way out to the jetty. Almost any evening you can count between 2 and 7 enjoying themselves on the freshly mowed grass.
  266. Many beautiful views exist on this short trail.
  267. Spotting the herd is always exciting. Can you see the bull?
  268. Wildlife is always present.
  269. A stroll along the Johns River Trail found this Heron sitting on a favorite perch.
  270. The herd was very close to the road. Many people got a chance to see them.
  271. August is the time to walk and feast! Bring your bucket for easy picking.
  272. Lots of yearlings means a mild winter last year.
  273. Now you see the bull!
  274. In June the elk were out again on the Johns River Trail.
  275. The flooded field makes a beautiful backdrop for this heron.
  276. Fog reflected off the river adds an interesting look.
  277. Morning Thistle.
