WINDERMERE REAL ESTATE CANCELS FIREWORKS TO PROTECT NESTING EAGLES -- Windermere Cup fireworks display canceled after learning of potential eagle impact

SEATTLE, Wash. – May 3, 2006 – Windermere Real Estate has canceled the 2006 Windermere Cup Sky Light Celebration fireworks following reports of nesting bald eagles in the Northeast Seattle area.  Despite a second review and approval from the City of Seattle’s Special Events Committee during yesterday’s meeting, Windermere has elected not to produce the 20 minute fireworks display, this Friday evening, May 5, to avoid any potential risks to the local bald eagle population, a nationally protected species.

“We have worked closely with the City of Seattle for several months to plan and approve this free community event – even volunteering to move the display out of Union Bay and into the middle of Lake Washington to avoid negative effects on environmentally sensitive areas and species,” said Jill-Jacobi Wood, owner of Windermere Real Estate.  “With the new knowledge that there are nesting bald eagles in the vicinity, we cannot, in good conscience, move forward with this display.”

The 20th annual Windermere Cup Regatta will commence as scheduled on Saturday morning, May 6 at 10:20 a.m. at the Montlake Cut.  This annual regatta, along with the Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day Boat Parade, is one of the largest free public events in the Puget Sound region each year.  In honor of the areas much-anticipated opening day of boating season, thousands of spectators line the shores of “The Cut,” positioning their boats along the racing and parade course to witness the inspiring competition and colorful pageantry.

“We thank area residents for their understanding and we look forward to celebrating the 20th annual Windermere Cup Regatta on Saturday morning at the Montlake Cut,” continued Jacobi-Wood.
