John was born and raised in Ashland; he graduated from Ashland High School in 1968 and then attended Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University). He graduated with a B.S. degree in math and a minor in secondary education. John met his wife Marilyn while at college. They have two children, Chelsea and Devin, and three grand children.
John joined Van Vleet & Associates Inc. in 1972 after graduating from college. The company had one office in Ashland with five sales people.
John taught real estate law, principles, and finance through the department of continuing education at Southern Oregon College while he was getting started in real estate. In 1974 Bob Van Vleet and Louise Myers retired and sold their stock to John and Leo. John and his family moved to Medford and John began managing a small office on Mistletoe Street. In 1978 John and Leo built a new office on Crater Lake Avenue in partners with The Protectors Insurance. Both companies grew and the office became too small. In 1992 John and Leo built our current office at 1117 E Jackson Street. In 2012 Van Vleet & Assoc. Inc. bought a half interest in Investors Marketplace’s Jacksonville office forming a partnership with Bob & Judy Methvin.  In 2016 we brought the Eagle point office into our company. Van Vleet & Associates has grown from one office with five agents in 1972 to four offices with approximately 85 agents.
John has been active in the Rogue Valley Association of Realtors, the Oregon Association of Realtors, and the Southern Oregon Multiple Listing Service. He has served on numerous committees and has held offices in each organization. He is a past member of the Real Estate Agency Board, a Governor appointed position. He was Realtor of the Year for the local association in 1984 and 2005. He received the distinguished service award from the State Association in 2005, and Realtor of the Year award in 2011.
John has been active in the community participating in several boards and committees. He is a member of, and past president of the Medford Rotary Club. John likes to play golf, fish, and hike with his wife and daughter for leisure.
